71 BREWING EXPANDS PORTFOLIO WITH INDIA PALE LAGER AND MUNICH DUNKEL
Six months after launching 71 Lager, and securing over 60 listings for its flagship brew, Dundee’s 71 Brewing has expanded its portfolio with the release of an India Pale Lager (IPL) and a Munich Dunkel, Ferrous Red.
IPL (4.4%)
A seasonal mash-up of lager and ale, IPL was borne from a robust combination of Polish Lubiner, American Chinook hops and lager malts. Thirst-quenching, IPL packs a striking twice-dry hopped aroma. Refreshing and mellow, this cold-fermented rarity is still undoubtedly full of character.
Appearance A light and golden beer with a brilliant white, frothy head
Aroma Fresh piney aromas from the American Chinook hops burst forward on the nose
Taste All the refreshing taste of a lager with an added hit of citrusy hops. The perfect thirst quencher
Palate Clean, crisp and refreshing with just enough carbonation to leave you ready for the next sip
Ferrous Red (4.8%)
With a cast-iron backbone of malt flavours, Ferrous Red is amber-red in colour with a hint of bitterness that settles just below its naturally smooth sweetness. Ferrous Red combines a finely-tuned blend of pale, Munich, toasted and crystal malts with Noble and American Mount Hood hops. It has been cold fermented for a clean crisp finish that’s sure to satisfy and refresh after a long day at the coalface.
Appearance A light copper beer with bright clarity and an off-white head
Aroma Moderately sweet malt is complemented by a slight floral hop aroma to give a satisfying but highly drinkable beer
Taste Rich with a complex malt profile. Toffee and red berry soon give way to a crisp and dry finish. A touch of roasted barley gives added depth and complexity
Palate Medium-light body with gentle creaminess. Smooth and satisfying
Alexander said: “From a standing start we’ve gained over 60 accounts for 71 Lager, far exceeding the targets we set ourselves at the beginning of this venture. We’re pouring at The Huxley in Edinburgh and across the Innis & Gunn Beer Kitchen chain and, in many places, we’re outselling the stalwart continental imports. We trialled these brews as limited editions at various beer conventions over the summer and the feedback was so phenomenal that we decided to make them a part of our permanent portfolio.”
He added: “Our inspiration from the start has been the great lager brewing traditions of central and eastern Europe and our aim is to explore and celebrate these classic beers in an innovative way.”
Emerging as the city’s only brewery in January this year, the Dundee start-up has had a busy opening campaign as headline sponsors of Carnival 56, the largest music festival to hit Scotland this year. The brewer is also part of Brewdog’s fifth annual #collabfest later this year, for which it will create a special edition beer for each of Brewdog’s UK and European bars.
IPL and Ferrous Red are available in 30 and 50 litre keg and in 330ml bottle (£2.10 RRP) from the brewer: sales@71brewing.
